Welcome to 5th Grade

Dear fifth grade parents,

Ofcstuff.wmf (8494 bytes)We are very pleased to have your child in our classes this coming September and look forward to a happy year full of progress.

We are sending you this letter as a welcome to fifth grade and also so that you know what is expected outside of the school day before the school year starts.

There will always be at least 2 written assignments as homework every night. One assignment will always be math, and the second will be social studies, science, english or spelling.

In addition, a written book report is due on the last school day of September, October, and November. With the help of the librarian, we will help your child to pick books from various required categories. Different formats will be used each month. From January through April, we will have book clubs in school and the books will be chosen by the students. During each day of the month, as part of the regular homework, your child should be reading a book at least l5 minutes a day, including weekends. Calendars recording their daily reading will be turned in at the end of each month. It will be part of their reading grade.

We feel very strongly that homework must be done on a consistent basis in order that each child get adequate practice and learn to assume responsibility for his learning experiences. Should a child fail to complete an assignment, it has been our practice to require the assignment to be completed at recess the next day. If it is not completed they receive a zero for the day.

If your child is absent, homework and classwork will be sent home with the nearest classmate or sibling. If you prefer to pick up such work in the Main Office, let me know and we can have it ready by the end of the day.

The daily homework assignments will be carefully explained each morning. All students will be issued a large assignment notebook the first day of school. This notebook must be carried to and from school each day. In this way, you and your child will have an ongoing record of all of the year's assignments.

All tests, except spelling, will be sent home to be looked over and signed. Please always have the tests returned to school on the following day.

Thanks for all your help in advance. We know it will be a great year!

Sincerely yours,

Carol Fleischman
