Luggage.wmf (14476 bytes)Dear Dad,

I miss you a lot and I can’t wait until you get here. When you come to Guatemala, the foods they have are Spanish beans and rice and other Mexican food. The capital of Guatemala is Guatemala City and it’s a very nice place to visit. Before the Spanish came, the Mayans lived there. When the Spanish took over, they their own language but before they took over the Mayans land, the Mayans spoke their own language. When you come here you have to know at least a little Spanish or Alicia can teach you. The people here drive in motor vehicles such as motor cycles, cars, and passenger cars. Guatemala has a tropical climate so it’s hot in the day and cool in the night, so you should bring shorts and thin pants and shirts. People here have to go to school from age 7 to13 because it’s the law. About 54% of Guatemala can’t read or write. Their favorite sports are soccer, bicycling, and basketball. For celebration they do colorful dances and set off fireworks. Guatemala has a lot of natural resources and a lot of forests. Guatemala City lies on top of a plateau somewhere in the Southeast part of Guatemala. In 1976 a major earthquake struck Guatemala City and caused thousands of deaths and major damage. The national holiday is Independence Day on September 15. The national anthem is called "Himno de Guatemala." The agriculture are bananas, beans, beef cattle, coffee, corn, cotton, rice, sugar cane, and wheat. It is fun here but it is kind of boring and lonely without my friends here. I hope you come soon.

Sincerely,

Your son Aaron
