8th Grade Art Exhibit - 2008
Impressions
from Stone Barns

This year the 8th grade class learned about the style of Impressionism. They chose an artist from the Impressionist era and an example of their work. Influenced by their artist, they created their own unique impressionist-style painting based upon photographs of landscapes, buildings, gardens, and animals taken on a field trip to Stone Barns. Impressionism is a style of art created in the late 1800's by a group of French artists living in Paris. The impressionistic style was the artists' attempt to capture the effects of light as it appeared on the forms of nature. The artists used individual brush strokes of contrasting colors so that their paintings seemed to shimmer or vibrate with light. Some famous Impressionist painters are Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas. All of the paintings in the exhibit have been done in acrylic on canvas board and all are 18" x 24" in size. They serve as the culmination of the students' eighth grade work and a lasting mementos of their years at Pocantico Hills.
