Ben Franklin was born in Boston in the year 1706. He came from a large poor family. He loved to read books. When he was 10, he quit school and went to work in his family's shop making soap and candles. He was bored and went to work printing newspapers. Ben also liked to help his city, Philadelphia. He began the first library and the first volunteer fire department. Besides being a newspaper publisher and a writer, he was also an inventor. He invented the Franklin Stove and also bifocal eyeglasses. Ben Franklin is also famous for discovering electricity. His experiment helped to discover a useful thing called the lightning rod. This helped to protect houses from electric storms. One of Ben's most important roles was that he was a leader of the U.S. Franklin helped settle the differences between the British and the U.S. In 1776 he signed the Declaration of Independence. He also helped to write The Constitution of the U.S. which is still the supreme law of America. Ben Franklin died in 1790 at the age of 81. He was one of the most important men in history.
