Figure Skating in the Olympics
By Olivia

Figure skating only started because of warriors and hunters from the Norse hunting tribe. The men crafted the first skates to travel and hunt faster. The skates were made out of elk bones and reindeer antlers.

The Olympics added figure Skating as a sport in 1924. The two Olympic skating sections were singles and pairs.

Figure skating goes all the way back to 20,000 B.C. Figure skating was the first Olympic game when it was in the summer Olympics in London. The Singles and pairs were then added in 1920.

Only three to five female skaters have successfully landed a triple axel jump during competition! Brian Boitano is the only one that has made a triple lutz with an upraised are his signature jump!

Here is one of the many tricks. Skaters do a sit spin in witch of the knee skating leg bent very low, and the free leg stretched out in front, parallel to the ice. There are other spins where the skater extends the free in front or to the side in a split or near a split position.

It was also the Dutch and French who got the credit for the inventing of figure skating.

Toe loops take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick.

Flips witch take off from a left back inside edge of the left foot and are launched by the right toe pick.

Loops take off from a right back outside edge and land on the same edge.

Slouches take off from a left back inside edge. Swinging the opposite leg around helps launch the jump.

Axels are the only jump that takes off from the forward edge.

Waltz jump is typically the first jump a skater learns.
