1929 started off bad with St.
Valentine's Day Massacre. It ended even worse when the stock market crashed. In
1929 the average weekly salary is $28 and seventy-one percent of U.S. families
have incomes below $2,500.

- Herbert
Hoover inaugurated. The first Oscars
are presented on May 16.
- In December construction
begins on the Empire State Building
to make it the tallest building in the world.
- Kodak
makes first 16mm film.
- Buck
Rogers comic strip makes its debut.
- October 29 the
Stock
market crashes.

Aircraft has its beginnings in a Baldwin, Long Island, Leroy Grumman and
Leon "Jake" Swirlbul opened aircraft repair shop. William T.
Schwendler was the chief engineer.
