Welcome to the year of 1983. Madonna hits the scene on MTV. Apple introduces "Lisa," their newest computer. IBM introduces the PC XT. Video recorders and Cabbage Patch dolls start flying off store shelves. Cassettes become more popular that albums. Leg warmers are in and cell phones show up. Australia II beats the US Liberty, taking away the America's Cup, breaking the longest winning streak in sports history. In “A Nation at Risk," the National Commission on Excellence in Education's issues a report report criticizing US schools. United States and French scientist isolate the virus that causes AIDS. President Reagan is talking about a Star Wars missile defense system while Mrs. Reagan is telling the country to Just Say No to drugs. Other things also occurred such as the development of "Crack" which is a powerful drug that caused people to get high.
On January 30 the Washington Redskins win Super Bowl XVII beating the Miami Dolphins 27 to 17. It takes place in Pasadena, California and the MVP is Washington Redskin’s running back, John Riggins.
On March 29 the first laptop computer in the United States is marketed by the Tandy Corporation. It is called the TRS-80 Model 100 and weighs less than 4 pounds. It costs $799 to $999 and runs on four small batteries.
On April 11 the 1982 Academy Awards take place.
On May 22 through May 31 the 76ers defeat the Lakers in four straight games to win the 1983 NBA Championship.
On May 29 American Indy driver Tom Sneva wins the Indianapolis 500.
Pioneer 10 leaves the solar system on June 13.
On June 18 NASA launches the shuttle Challenger. Among the crew Sally Ride works as the first American woman in space. The Challenger is the first shuttle to use the Remote Manipulating Structure.
On July 6 the American League beats the National League in the All-Star Game for the first time since 1971 and only the second time since 1962.
The first Amateur Athletics Foundation World Athletics Championships take place in Helsinki, Finland, August 7 – August 14. During this event 157 nations compete and the United States leads the gold medal list with 8 medals. Mary Decker and Carl Lewis win medals for the United States. Grete Waitz from Norway wins the first ever World Championship Women's Marathon
On August 30 Guion Bluford becomes the first African American in space.
On September 17 Vanessa Williams becomes the first African American Miss America.
On September 28 the National Basketball Association announces that any player convicted of taking illegal drugs, or admitting it, will be banned from the league for life.
On October 11 the Baltimore Orioles beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 1 to win the 1983 World Series.
A compound in Beirut, Lebanon is blown up by terrorists killing 241 U.S. and 58 French peacekeepers on October 23.
On October 25, the U.S. invades Grenada and then vetoes a United Nations condemnation of the invasion.
Lech Wałesa, the Polish union leader and the President of Poland receives the noble Peace prize on October 5.
On November 2 Congress votes to make January 15 a federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
