Glossary of Words

almanac - a book published every year with facts about the weather, tides and rising and setting of the sun

apprentice - a person who works for a skilled worker in order to learn a trade or skill

 

arithmetic - figuring with numbers, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing (today we call it math)

 

autobiography - the story of a person's own life written by that person

 

bifocals - special eyeglasses with lenses that have one part to help you see close up and another to help you see far away

 

colony - a territory that is far away from the country that governs (rules) it

constitution - laws used to govern a state or country

delegate - a person who is chosen to act for others

electricity - one of the basic forms of energy in the world

 

horn book - a child's first reader made of a sheet of parchment (paper) covered by a sheet of transparent (clear) horn

 

 

lightning rod - a rod attached to a building to attract lightning and direct lighting down into the ground so it doesn't hit the building

peace treaty - a formal agreement between countries

Pennsylvania – one of the thirteen original colonies of the United States

Philadelphia - a city in Pennsylvania where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States were written and where the First Continental Congress met

postmaster - a person in charge of a post office

 

printing press - a machine for printing things like newspapers, books and magazines

 

 

vegetarian - a person who does not eat meat, just fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts

 

wick - a cord in a candle that burns when it is lit
