Pocantico Hills Central School
No provisions were made for high school so the
students had to go to Tarrytown or North Tarrytown. In the early years they had to walk,
but later a committee of parents organized to provide a carriage for their transportation.
On January 15, 1930 residents of the three districts met at the Lyceum to form a central school district. A new board of trustees was elected and the Pocantico Hills Central School was organized.
In 1930, Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.'s generous contribution made the new school possible. A principal, ten teachers, a school nurse, a playground, and a beautiful fully equipped building greeted new students.
The purpose from the beginning was to make the Central School the best there was. Curriculum was restricted to the first eight grades. High school students transferred to North Tarrytown on a tuition basis. Special teachers were employed to teach music, art, and physical education. The school opened its facilities to the children after-hours.
Population growth since World War II created new problems for the Pocantico Hills Central School District. In 1955 new wings were added to accommodate an even larger number of pupils.
Today Pocantico Hills School District is still made up of a single school. It has an enrollment of 355 students and a budget of ten and one-half million dollars. As in the past, students have to choose among Sleepy Hollow, Pleasantville, and Briarcliff High Schools. The present structure offers a picturesque blend of old and new.
