George Washington
by Rodney

George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22, 1732. He belonged to an old colonial family. They believed in hard work and public service.

George began school in Fredericksburg, soon after his family moved to Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River. He only went to school for about seven years. His best subject was Arithmetic. He stopped going to school when he was about 14 years old.

George Washington is known as the man who is first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen. In 1789 almost everyone wanted George Washington to be president of the United States of America so they voted for him and he was elected President.

Finally, on one cold sunny day in December, George returned from a horseback ride and discovered his throat was sore. During the night it became hard for him to breathe. The next day on December 14, 1799 George died. He was 67 years old.
