Clara Barton

Clara Barton was known as the Angel of the Battlefield.

Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821 in Oxford Mass. Her parents were Stephen and Sarah Barton. She had four other older siblings, Dorothy [17], Stephen [15], David [13], and Sally [10]. Clara was home schooled in the beginning. Then she attended Colonel Richard School. Then went a boarding school at the age of 8. She missed home so much that her dad came and got her.

In 1861 Clara became a volunteer nurse during the Civil War. After the war she went to Europe. And helped open hospitals during the Franco Prussin war. Then Clara found out about The Red Cross. Then she came back to America and she founded The American Red Cross here. When there are floods, fires, or any natural disasters the Red Cross is there to help. Clara Barton died in April of 1912.

And that is why we have the Red Cross today.
