Clarissa Harlowe Barton

1821- 1912

Do you know who the angel of the battlefield was? Well, keep reading and find out. Clarissa Barton was born in Oxford, Massachusetts December 25,1821. When she was only 11 she took care of her older brother who was wounded in an accident. She became a teacher and she thought it seemed like she would be one forever. She founded many free schools in New Jersey. In 1854 she became a clerk in a Patent office, but it was not for long before the war began that’s when she resigned. She wanted to help out in the war she volunteered to bring supplies to wounded soldiers. After the war she supervised a system search for missing soldiers. She succeeded in finding 13,000 lost soldiers. In 1869 through 1873 she lived in Europe and established hospitals during the French-Prussian war. She was honored with the iron red cross of Germany. Of her and her strong will she was able to form an American Red Cross society in 1881. She was able to be president until 1904. She also wrote books one of them was called, Story of My Childhood. Then in 1912 she died of old age many say she was a very brave person. I think she certainly was.
