Mary McLeod Bethune
Mary McLeod Bethune was born in Maysville, South Carolina in 1875.
Mary McLeod Bethune is famous because she built a school for girls. When one of her
students was treated badly in a hospital, she built a hospital in her school. In 1895 she
graduated from the Moody Bible Institute, there she was the only black student. She heard
about a city in Florida named Daytona where there was no school at all. In 1904 she built
a school for young black women there. She was also an advisor to four presidents.
