Laura W. Bush

When Laura Welch was a child growing up in Texas, she never dreamed that one day she would be the First Lady of the United States of America. Laura was born on November 4, 1946 in Midland, Texas. She went to Southern Methodist University where she majored in education. Then she got a degree in library science from the University of Texas. She worked as a teacher in Houston, Dallas and Austin, Texas. Laura met George W. Bush in 1977. It must have been love at first sight because they were married three months later on November 5, 1977. They have twin girls, Jenna and Barbara (named after their 2 grandmothers Barbara Bush & Jenna Welch.) In Texas, she worked to interest people in education, literacy and breast cancer. In her spare time Mrs. Bush likes to read and garden. As First Lady, Mrs. Bush will promote literacy and breast cancer awareness.
