Ella Fitzgerald was born in
Newport News Virginia in 1918 she grew up in an orphanage in New York City. When Ella
Fitzgerald was 16 years old, someone discovered her singing in a Harlem Talent Show. She
sang with some bands and then directed a band. She went to Europe and Asia. She also
performed in Jazz Concerts at the Philharmonic. In 1958 Fitzgerald sang with the jazz
composer Duke Ellington at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1985 she performed at the 1985
Kool Jazz Festival and at Carnegie Hall. Ella Fitzgerald died in 1996. She was 78 years
old. She became a famous black woman because of her good
voice.
