Gail Goestenkors
When Gail Goestenkors took over the Women’s Basketball team at Duke
University 15 years ago they were not very good. Gail worked hard as a coach at
Duke. She has led the Blue Devils to lots of wins in those 15 years. Gail is
known as "coach G" to other coaches, players, and student supporters. Because of
"coach G," Duke is now recognized as one of the elite women’s college basketball
teams. She led Duke to their first appearance in the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight,
Final Four and the Championship game of the NCAA Tournament. She also led her
team to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship Game. Gail Goestenkors’
record at Duke was 396-99, that’s a winning percentage of 80%! Gail was named
ACC Coach of the year in 1996, ’98, ’99, 2002, 2003 and 2004 and 2006-07
National Coach of the Year. In April Gail was named women's basketball head
coach at The University of Texas. At the announcement in Austin on April 4, 2007
Gail said, "There is a wonderful tradition of excellence in academics and
athletics at The University of Texas. I look forward to becoming a member of
this great Longhorn athletic family and welcome this tremendous opportunity to
make Texas women's basketball a national-championship contender, year in and
year out." Go Longhorns!
