Sonja Henie was born on April 8, 1912 in Oslo, Norway. Henie was a Norwegian figure skater and a very talented actress. Sonja won more Olympic Championships and World titles than any other woman figure skater of her time. Henie was one of the richest women in the entertainment business.
Henie won her first competition, at the Norwegian champions when she was only 9. She came in 8th at the 1924 winter Olympics, when she was only 11. Sonja won the first World Figure Skating Championships in 1927 when she was just 14 and went on to win 10 World Championships and three Olympic Gold Medals in all. Henie also won 6 European Championships. She brought ballet to ice skating and made it beautiful! Young girls bought Sonia Henie ice skates even after her career was over.
Sonja Henie was also in movies. When she was done with the Figure Skating Championships in 1936, she became a professional ice skater performing in live shows. When Sonja Henie was just a girl she chose to move to Hollywood to become a movie star. Sonja Henie starred in a lot of movies during 1930s & 1940s. Her movieís include One In A Million, Thin Ice, My Lucky Star, Happy Landing, Everything Happens At Night, Second Fiddle, Sun Valley Serenade, Iceland, Winter Time and Itís a Pleasure.
Sonja Henie was married three times, first to Dan Topping, second to Winthrop Gardiner and finally to Niels Onstad. Sonja Henie died of leukemia on October 12, 1969.
Henie is still remembered now, because of her talented acting skills and her amazing moves on the ice!
