Emily Jennings Stowe

wpe8.gif (13932 bytes)Emily Jennings Stowe was born in Canada in 1831. She is famous because she was a physician. Emily Stowe died in 1903. In 1865 Emily was refused entry to the University of Toronto because of her sex. She lived in a time when women were not allowed to vote. Emily continued to practice illegally until the Surgeons gave her her license in 1880. Her daughter Augusta Stowe became the first woman to study medicine and graduate from a Canadian University in 1883. She was president of the Toronto Women's Literary Club.
