Phillis Wheatley
Phillis was born 1753 and she lived in Africa. When Phillis was 8
years old she was stolen from her parents in Africa and brought to America to be a slave.
She started writing poetry when she was 14. She became really popular in Boston in the
1760's. People loved her poetry. The Wheatley's freed her when she was 20 and she went to
England because she was sick. Her first book of poems was printed in England. She left
England and came back to America to take care of Mr. Wheatley, the man who was her master.
She died at 31. Although her life was short, Phillis Wheatley will always be the one for
me, because I like poems and she did too. She was one of our first African American poets.
