Dear Families,

Our Book Fair has been a huge success! Thank you to all our parent volunteers who have made it so successful and enjoyable for the children.

Our Spirit Games were fantastic once again this season – thank you for coming out to the games! Our last one was this week – volleyball – and our Hawks finished their season with a hard-fought win and an impressive 12-1 record.

This week was Media Literacy Week – while teachers are continuing their activities into November, this week our pre-k students, as part of their 30-day reading challenge, read Sonia's Digital World in library class and they discussed how to make sure you have grownup help when selecting books online. In third grade, they examined and evaluated a variety of media including news headlines, advertisements, photos, and posters.

What a wonderful Halloween Parade today with a festive crowd! And I would say we also had one of the smoothest post-parade early-dismissals ever - of over 100 students! The only way it runs so efficiently and safely is with strict procedures, lots of helpful staff, and cooperative families, so thank you!

LOCKDOWN DRILLS
In the coming weeks and months, we'll be conducting lockdown drills with our children and staff. That said, on Tuesday morning, we'll be conducting a staff-only lockdown drill with the Mt. Pleasant Police Department before the start of parent-teacher conferences. So, if you happen to be driving by and see multiple police cars outside the school on Tuesday, don't be alarmed!

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES: NOVEMBER 3
Parent-teacher conferences are on Tuesday, November 3 (Election Day).  There will be a combination of virtual or in-person options, starting at 9:30am, as well as evening slots from 6:00-8:30 for those who are unavailable during the day.

PTC WIZARD IS STILL OPEN AND SLOTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

If you're having a virtual conference, remember to log into PTC Wizard and click on the meeting link to join your meeting.

Here is the structure:

**Middle School Grades 5-8: 10-minute conferences (in-person-only from 9:30-11:20am; virtual-only from 12:30pm-3:20pm; virtual-only from 6:00-8:20).  7/8 teachers meet in two-teacher teams, so instead of scheduling through the "teachers" section of PTC Wizard, you go to the "teams" section.

**Elementary School Grades JPK-4: conferences in 20-minute increments (choice of in-person or virtual) - MAKE YOUR SELECTION WHEN YOU REGISTER.

**Related Arts and World Language: conferences in 15-minute increments (choice of in-person or virtual) - MAKE YOUR SELECTION WHEN YOU REGISTER.  Note – our Spanish, French, music, library-media, FACS teachers will be at a conference during the day, but they'll be available for all the evening slots. If those don't work and you still want to meet, please reach out to them to schedule a time.
8TH GRADE PARENTS: HIGH SCHOOL SELECTION PROCESS STARTS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 @6:30PM
It’s hard to believe, but it’s already time for our 8th grade families to start thinking about high school!  Our very important kickoff informational meeting will be on Thursday, November 5, at 6:30 in our auditorium.  If you’re a parent of an 8th grader, please do not miss it – we share information from the high schools, review timelines and events, discuss policies and best practices, and answer any initial questions.  We’re with you every step of the way, but our first meeting together is very important!

PICTURE RETAKES
By this point you should have received a digital proof of your child's photos from Picture Day.  Children also brought home printed proofs this week.  On Thursday, November 5, the photographers will be back for retakes.  If you would like your child to retake their photograph, please sign up here.  If your child was absent on the initial Picture Day, they will automatically be placed on this list.

WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE 10/13 – 11/6
Thank you to everyone who has donated so far to our PTA-supported Winter Clothing Drive – our bins are growing!  Gently used coats and jackets, gloves and hats are all appreciated.

SPECIAL THANKSGIVING EDITION OF HAWKS JOURNEY: HAWKS ON PARADE!
We're excited to announce a special Thanksgiving edition of Hawks Journey!
Pre-K through Middle School students are invited to join us on Wednesday, November 25, for Hawks on Parade: A Thanksgiving Journey! This fun-filled afternoon will bring students together for hands-on activities inspired by the excitement and creativity of the Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Students will spend the afternoon creating, collaborating, and preparing for our very own Hawks Journey Thanksgiving Parade at 3:00 PM, where families are invited to join us and cheer on our participants!  Please see the attached flyer for program details, including schedules, tuition, and transportation information.
We hope your child will join us for this special afternoon of creativity, community, and Thanksgiving fun!
Adventure awaits... Let the JOURNEY begin!
REMINDER: UPCOMING WEATHER AND OUR RECESS POLICY
I know it's still crisp and refreshing outside, but I want to be fully transparent about our recess policy and how I make decisions around our 20-minute recess.  First, my goal is to always have children outside. Here are our guidelines related to the REAL-FEEL temperature in Sleepy Hollow during our recess windows (11:22-12:02 / 12:05-12:45)

  • 32 degrees or greater:  OUTDOOR RECESS
  • 20 – 31 degrees:  INDOOR (GYM)/ OUTDOOR (FULL ACCESS) OPTION – Student Choice
  • 19 degrees and below: INDOOR RECESS (GYM)

Note: Elementary and middle schools could have different recess restrictions if the weather conditions change between the two time slots.
The good news is that the kids love the gym, which we section off for different sports themes, and we have activities, mats, and sitting areas in the gym lobby as well.  In addition, the library is open for middle school students who want to get some work done.
I’m fine with snow, but not excessive mud (or with our fields, it’s actually a nasty mix of mud and goose poop) – safety always comes first, and remember, we still have two hours of school left once they come back inside!

Weather-related reasons we DON’T go outside:

  • High wind advisories
  • Air quality advisories
  • Active rain (light mist isn’t a huge deal)
  • Damaged/flooded/icy conditions (recess could still be outside, but just not in those areas)
  • Extreme heat or extreme cold

MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS – FEEDBACK ON THE TRANSITIONS
Middle school parents - If you haven’t had a chance to give us some feedback on the opening weeks of school and how things are going with your child, please make sure you re-visit the ParentSquare form that Mrs. DePaola sent out so we can check in!
